Loyal
The Dufferin Hotel in Vancouver, BC was usually a nice place to stay. It was within Loyal’s price range and close to downtown. The lobby of The Dufferin was squeezed between a raucous gay bar, tonight offering live dancers “In The Buff at The Duff”, and a restaurant that he loved because they included single serving containers of peanut butter on the table along with the usual selection of jelly so an order of toast could become PB&J sandwiches for the day.
On this night though, sleep was proving impossible at The Dufferin as the entire 3rd floor was embroiled in unabashed mischief. Loyal opened the door leading to the hallway just as a man wearing nothing but a towel ran past. He was pursued by another man whose towel had been removed and was now being used to try and snap the first man. Looking down the hallway three men in various states of undress could be seen groping each other near the ice machine. Loyal shut his door.
“Hi, this is Loyal in room 306. Listen, I don’t want to ruin anyone’s good time but I have a really early morning. Could I maybe switch rooms.”
“Oh… um, you didn’t want to be on the 3rd floor?”
“I don’t care what floor I’m on, I just want some quiet so I can get to sleep.”
“Sir, I am SO sorry. When you checked in, a single man with a backpack, I just assumed…”
“Oh, is this the party floor? You assumed I was here to party? Oh that’s great. No need to be sorry. I’m flattered. At my age I almost never get mistaken for a partier anymore, but I’m afraid I really do need to get some sleep.”
“I’m really sorry. I should’ve known when you asked for a wake up call. I will be right up with a new key. I am really so very sorry.”
The 6th floor was nice and quiet. The blackout curtains worked, and Loyal drifted off to get 4 glorious hours of sleep before he’d climb back behind the wheel and begin his long drive south.

Welcome to the first chapter of my second novel, Festival. You’ll meet a whole bunch of characters all having their own epic adventures as they make their way to the Riff Randell Comedy Fest in a small college town in California. I’m excited about sharing it and I hope you enjoy reading. A new chapter posts here every Wednesday. And we’re off…
